BT broadband modem software

I have a client who wants the cheapest possible computer to use with BT
Broadband. I have a cheap computer available but it has Windows98. I would
like to let her have this one if at all possible (rather than the expense of
Windows XP Home) to keep the cost down. Can anyone confirm that software
provided by BT will run under Windows98 please?

Thanks.

Which BT product will she be using? Can she not use a router and
therefore the Microsoft Windows 98 machine? Not that I would actually
recommend connecting that operating system to the internet and certainly
not via a DSL modem.

You don't need any software provided by BT to get computer to work.
Has the W98 PC got a network port?

Don't know what BT product she'll be using. Probably the cheapest and
simplest. I appreciate Windows98 isn't the best OS but she would appreciate
it if I could get her something even 'bog standard' and 'cheap and nasty' as
long as it works.

Thanks.

The cheapest BT product appears to be Total Broadband Option 1, with
which you can get a Home Hub (router) for £30 if you order it online
with the service.

I would say that this initial outlay would quickest/cheapest solution
based on the above. It will also give you a little bit of protection for
the machine.

But what modem or router is provided with this package and will the software
run under Windows 98?

Thanks.

If you can connect via a standard RJ45 network connection, the odds are
you can connect using almost any variant of computer as long as it has a
network stack :-}

I used Win98 well past its' "scrap it" date (up until about 2 years ago
to be more precise), and a router makes life _so_ much easier when it
comes to connectivity. You simply plug the computer in to it and go.

It also far simplified my testing of other OS's like various linux
distribs - no more piddling about trying to find driver X for modem Y
that only has a USB adaptor and supported by distribution Z.

If you can connect via Ethernet to the Home Hub (which is an ADSL modem
router) you do not need to load any of the BT software, therefore - yes it
will work fine. Even if the PC does not have an Ethernet port you can pick
up a PCI network card for not much over a fiver.

Without meaning to sound rude, do you believe that you are in a position to
offer this customer any help if there is an issue, when you don`t seem to
know the basics of Windows 98 networking. I don`t know anything about it
either, but I`m not trying to sell a machine (albeit while trying to reduce
the cost to the customer). Just something to bear in mind - they won`t
thank you, or think you`ve done them a favour, if it goes wrong and you`re
not able to fix the problem.

How old is this machine? We can't give away Win98 era machines.
