Does anyone have any comments on BT Broadband...?

I think it used to be considered far from any good, but what is the
situation these days?

Thanks

Jim

Good enough product in my experience but very very expensive and utterly
appalling customer service. I am told that Talk Talk and Tiscali are
worse but having never had the pleasure (!), I just know that I don't
want to experience worse than BT.

The above reasons (high price and the appalling Indian call-centre) are what
prompted me to move from BT to Plusnet.
Ironically, soon after I moved, BT bought Plusnet but have thankfully shown
no signs yet of integrating BT Broadband and Plusnet, which still operates
as an independent ISP but now has the advantages of BT's money-pot to dig
into for increased capacity, etc.

I recently left BT after many years and went to Zen.

I watched BT's business change from being a premium priced, rather
unimaginative, but solid and dependable organisation to a "Pile 'em
high, sell 'em cheap" outfit. They now have little regard for the
individual customer, whatever their pious statements on "We aim to
delight out customers" etc etc.

They sell on price and compete with the other mass market ISPs - who are
little better. Customer service is awful. Prices are generally less than
the smaller, specialist ISPs, but the difference is made up by
"Monetising" customers browsing. BT has relationships with some very
dubious partners in the spyware business.

The most serious issue with BT is the proven willingness to lie to the
customer on matters of privacy and data protection. Last year they
almost certainly broke the law when they ran secret trials of a most
obnoxious method of spying on customers' traffic. The only reason they
weren't prosecuted seems to have been their unhealthily cosy
relationship with Government on an "Old boys" basis. They are no longer
to be trusted, I'm afraid.

Been there Kraftee and I would not touch them with a barge pool on the
other hand I would not entertain anyone other than BT for fixed line
provision . Had BT and GPO before them now for around 47 years with
maybe a couple of years brake and never had any problems with them
which is more than I can say for Virgin .

The only "advantage" I can think of is that if you have a credit account
with BT for your phone line they will add broadband to that account - so no
need to pay by direct debit or through a credit card. Of course you have to
pay a £4.50 per bill handling charge for having a credit account

Just make sure you don't confuse BT Wholesale with BT Retail. BT Wholesale
provide a national broadband network avalable at all exchanges which
they resell to retail operators - such as BT Retail, and it's BT Retail
who're delaing with Phorm, etc.

Other retailers who use the BT Wholesale network include Enta (themselves
resellers), Zen, AAISP, and so on.

So when looking for an ISP using the various checkers
(e. www.samknows.com), don't think that just because the exchange only
has "BT" that it's only BT Retail who can provide service, as you still
have a choice of over 100 ISPs who can ue the BT Wholesale network.

Tiscali defintely worse. AOL even worse than tiscali.

Talktalk about as bad.

Virgin DSL also worse.

Bt is only poor.

There are some really awful ISPs out there.

Of the majors only BE and O2 seem to get ny kind of enthusiasm. Whereas
the small indepedents do a good job by and large. They may not have
exactly what you want, ut they generally supply it honestly and support
it adequately.
