We have the BT Business 500 Plug & Go package with the
USB modem. I understand this has 1 dynamic IP address.

I want to get VPN up and running so the boss, and me, can connect
to the network from home. Will I need static IP addresses for this?
I suspect we will also need to the Business 500Plus Plug & Go as
you can get static IP's with this?

Cheers

I use VPN from home to work on BT Broadband (Dynamic IP) and the IP address
doesn't matter on our setup.

Is the VPN configured from your Router or what? Are you saying
you also only have a single IP address on your PC at home, and
is the office server router the same?

Have you considered a dynamic IP service? http://www.no-ip.com and
http://www.dyndns.org come to mind..

You can run a service on your computer like http://www.directupdate.net/ to
make sure the DNS records are always upto date.

Sunil

My Netgear ADSL router (DG814) updates the entry in www.dyndns.org each
time it is booted so no software on the PC is needed - and I can always
find it!

Yes, some routers do have that feature, however the OP stated that they were
using a USB modem

The IP supplied by BT to the Modem side is Dynamic. The IP supplied by the
Router switch side is supposed to be (DHCP) but, of course, it tends to
remain static once the router has allocated it as the MAC is assigned the IP
in the router's list.

Doesn't matter anyway as the VPN client works whatever the IP address given
by the router.

The VPN client connects to the server I login and Bob's your Scutter!

Thanks for the reminder. Before I had a router (DG814 BTW) I used the USB
modem and used VPN without any problems.

So, what, do these websites offer you the chance to connect remotely
to your office from a home user etc?

These websites allow you to "own" an Internet address out of
a selection of domains they have - mostly for free. The client software
which runs when the PC is booted remotely updates this DNS entry to be
what it has been just handed from the ISP by DHCP. So accessing
"mypc.homeip.net" or similar will always get its current address.
