I am not on BT but am trying to help someone who is on BT Basic, setup
through it an Outlook Express pop3 account they have already with a
different ISP.

Am I correct that I can do this even although BT Basic only offers web
email?

Sorry if the above is not explained clearly enough!

Yes - as long as the other ISP allows this.

You should be able to access a POP3 account with another ISP very easily,
aslong as you have the correct credentials. Though some of them might
restrict access to their own ISP connection, i.e. you have to use their
connection as an extra level of authentication. Again, I don't know of such
a problem, I can connect using POP3 from my BT Yahoo connection to my
Blueyonder connection via POP3 - so it should work.

B0yce,

Thanks. What is your BT Yahoo pop3 server address? Do you think this
will be the same server as the "BT Basic" one?

there isn't one. Sunil was saying you can access other ISPs POP3
servers while connected with BT Basic.

Typically (depending on the ISP) you would only be able to download new
messages, you would not be able to send.

The OP either needs to subscibe to a POP3 email service which allows access via
BT basic or use something like Hotmail which is not (AFAIK) Pop3

It surprises me that BT offer a service without POP3 email!

you never can send with POP3.

its a basic connectivity account, for those that bring their own
services (or use webmail or whatever).

well that's OK for rx, but you need SMTP to send. Free a/c on yahoo.co.uk
seems to allow this :-) Other paid-for and free services exist like Clara
www.clara.net/btbroadband and Plus.Net www.plus.net/btbroadband

There's a free 3 month trial of the PN news and mail, while Clara does two
accounts with news + mail at 9.99/year or for 29.99/year they do a mail +
news [inc binaries with a 10 GB limit each month] + domain reg + hosting

After old complaints of lost mail on BTI, it didnt surprise me at all they
offered a bare bones IP connection and allowed all other services to be at
customer choice, though the recent changes mean they no longer seem to put
links to the Clara or Plus.Net sites, just BT Yahoo! mail instead (yuk!)
