HI there

We have just spent 5 hours trying to install BT Broadband Basic onto
friend's PC. She was running windows 98 but it did not like o
understand the USB modem that was provided.

Upgraded to windows millenium and the USBs now work but the instal
crashes repeatedly at stage 3: install drivers

If you plug in the Bt modem a message appears to say that there ha
been an incomplete installaion and that it should be removed. Tried t
remove the device but just gets stuck in a loop of reboots.

Any idea what is going on? Can you get the drivers for the mode
anywhere else thus avoiding the crappy install disk?

Any help will be most appreciated as we are really at the end of ou
tether.

TIA

Sharon & Rodd

Sorry Doris Stokes is out atm, so we can't tell what fucking modem
you're trying to install.
Have you checked to see if this mysterious modem will work with that
infamous crock of shit M$ ME? The chances are it won't.

Have you looked here

ISTR you should install the drivers before the modem is plugged in at
all.

One option is to throw away the usb modem thingy and get an adsl
router/modem (approx GBP 30?) and a network card for your PC (approx GBP
3). Sometimes you'll need to buy an ethernet cable too, but the packs
I've seen usually include one in the bundle.

Your PC will be a lot more secure from "the outside world" this way,
too - although you should still ensure you're running uptodate AV and
ideally a software firewall to trap unwanted *outbound* traffic.

If you're having so much trouble with a USB modem, why not just get a cheap
router and connect via ethernet? I've seen routers for <£35 these can't be
any worse than USB modems and don't need any drivers on the PC.

These things tend to work better with the NT flavour OS's from MS.

As a rough guide: -

W95 - lots of bugs, but no USB.

W98 - more bugs than an anthill

WME - more bugs than a termite mound

Typically W98 will crash or freeze more than once a day. By contrast, my
old WNT had 6 blue screen crashes in six years, and all but one of those had
a sensible explanation. My newer WXP system has not [yet] had one in 18
months.

Windows ME is notorious for the number of bugs. Really an upgrade to XP is
called for on security grounds if nothing else. It should also cure the
driver problem as well.
