BT today confirmed plans to extend the rollout of its wholesale SDSL
products to a further 50 exchanges. SDSL gives the same rate of data
transfer upstream as downstream. It is particularly suitable for end-users
such as SMEs, people in remote offices or teleworkers who require
business-class connectivity to their service provider for applications such
as fast file transfer and web hosting.

BT Wholesale launched its SDSL services in September 2003 on 100 exchanges
serving metropolitan areas in London, Greater Manchester, Merseyside,
Yorkshire, the West Midlands and Scotland. A further 50 locations have now
been selected on the basis of demand, market analysis and feedback from
service providers. Exchanges to be upgraded in this phase of rollout will be
in Greater London and West Midlands. BT Wholesale is planning to enable
these exchanges by the end of January 2004.

From http://www.btplc.co.uk/Mediacentre/A...03/an03161.htm
which includes a list of exchanges.

Regards
Sunil

How does SDSLs attenuation limits compare with ADSL?
Is SDSL merely a software switch, or does it require extra hardware at
the exchange?

They are lower as SDSL is the same speed in both directions - I did hear a
figure of 35dB quoted but thats unconfirmed - that would compare to a 45dB
figure for 1 or 2MB ADSL

I believe all the DSLAM's that BT have fitted can potentially support SDSL
if upgraded via software.

Though I imagine the reason its not being rolled out nationwide is given the
way BT operate, they are deciating a DSLAM to SDSL rather than having the
two services sharing the "same" equipment.

BT have an SDSL checker at
http://62.172.198.79/broadband1/gett...about_sdsl.asp

Note: The SDSL products in Central London are actually supplied over
Bulldog's network, which BT Wholesale resell. Bulldog resell BT Wholesale
SDSL on the other enabled exchanges.

Sunil
