BT ADSL line checker

My phone line was labelled on BT's database as being too long for
an ADSL service (actual length 5.45km). Then in July I managed to
get on the extended reach pilot.
I've been happily using ASDL on my line for the last three months.

AIUI the trial is now over, and since Sept 24th, BT have raised the limit
to lines of up to 6km ?

My neighbours, who also wish to have ADSL asked me if they
could now apply. I entered their phone number into the checker, and
it says the line is too long. Indeed, if I enter my own phone number, it
also says the same !

So what's going on here? Have BT updated their data base, it seems not ?

[My house, and that of my neighbours are both modern houses, fed from the
same distribution point (in a manhole 40 ft away) so I assume our lines
take the same route ?]

Its not the distance from the exchange thats important (thats only a
guide) - what is important is the quality of the cable between your house
and the exchange.

The BT Checkers are not 100% accurate - in fact they are generally
considered conservative - i.e. your length is "too long" even though you now
have ADSL, though they have been updated to take into account the new line
limits that BT have introduced.

Your neighbours will have to apply for ADSL via an ISP in order to get BT to
carry out a proper line test during the activation process - thats the only
way they will know if they can get actually get the service or not.

Sunil

That is a totally logical and practical way of assuming that your neighbour
would be able to apply for ADSL, BUT this is BT we are talking about. I am
1.3Km away from my local ADSL enabled exchange, but I cannot order ADSL, and
the reasons are varying from aluminium links to fibre in link (as it seems
to change each time). The best comment I have had from BT on this is 'move
house or wait'. I am thinking about running some wire between my house & the
exchange and renting it to BT....?!

Just about to explore the 2nd line option (which was plumbed into the house
by the previous owners but not active at the moment) as this was installed
much later and may just scrape in some way....!?

I live in hope.

Indeed, my attenuation figure is 57dB. A failure before the trial, a pass now.

Except that applying for an ADSL service with most of them, if the
BT database says you're a failure, your application stops dead at
that point, doesn't it ?

With some of them yes - if this happens with their choosen ISP, they have
two options:

1. Ask the original ISP to submit a "manual order" to BT Wholesale - this
means that BTW will carry out a line test regardless of what the the
database says..

2. Send the order to a more clued-up ISP...

Nope, I am in the same situation..adsl installed and working on the
extended reach, and line checker still says I will not be able to get adsl
as the line length is too long.
If BT want to get maximum take up for adsl (and I assume they do
considering how much they spend on advertising it) then they should be
saying that it *may* be possible depending on the test results. How many
people go to the line checker site and believe what they read and stop
there? Quite a few I should imagine.

Liam,

Has your exchange been enabled yet, google to ADSL guide, and check your
exchange against that.
