BT have announced that 80% of the population is now connected to an ADSL
enabled exchange (with about 97% of those actually able to get some form of
ADSL)

For comparision - according to BT that is also the population of the UK
which is connected to the gas mains network or as they put it:

"This month we'll have as many people connected to exchanges offering
broadband as can switch on their mains gas cooker to make the supper."

They also say that 400 exchanges have hit their trigger levels and have yet
to be upgraded and are not included in the above stats and that they have
hit 80% availability 2 years before their original estimates - which they
are putting down to the success of their pre registration scheme

Interesting to note that 80% coverage = only about 25% of BT's exchanges
have been enabled so far.

BT's full press release is at

Regards
Sunil

We may look back at this in years to come as one of BT's greatest
achievements in the 21st century.

Does anyone have penetration figures for other EU's countries?

Slight ammendment to that statement Sunil, its 80% of *HOMES* rather
than *population*, no?

At least, thats the way I read it anyway. Equates to about 5 million
homes that are not served by an ADSL enabled exchange at the moment.

Thats fantastic. What about those of who despite being a) Connected to an
ADSL exchange and b) Within the distance range for ADSL but who still cannot
get it becuase the line quality is to poor, and BT don't give a crap about
sorting it?

Apart from being within the distance range as being totally irrelevant.. I
suggest you wait for BT to increase the range again - as you said its quite
possible that BT are looking at increasing the limits to <65dB having found
that <60dB is not really causing them any issues.

I have today received an e-mail from BT containing the following:

"We would like to stress that the extension to 6km has been a large step
from the previous 5.5km and as such it is unlikely that ADSL can be
delivered beyond this limit.

This does not mean that customers whose lines fall outside the new
criteria will be consigned to the sidelines. BT will continue to
investigate a range of broadband technologies to deliver broadband to
areas where ADSL may not be suitable"

hmmmmm
