And when you did get one, you crowed about it to the neighbours.
An ex-BT colleague of mine who worked in the Cardiff office told me
about a couple in the South Wales Valleys who built a porch on the front
of their house while waiting for the phone to be connected, and when the
engineer called they told him to put the phone in the porch.
He did, and they then spent many a happy day - and night, with the light
on - on the phone, while waving to their neighbours to show them that
they had got a phone (and they hadn't)!
