BT 10 GB Monthly usage

Has anyone gone over this on their package and if so were the charges from
BT excessive. I have always been on unlimited so I have no idea what 10 GB
equates to in real terms. Is it relative to time spent online (I spend a
lot time online) or purely data. My usage is as follows

Online every night surfing, receiving and sending emails
Downloading music very occasionally from iTunes
Downloading apps from iTunes
Syncing my iPhone through iTunes
Using Newsgroups

You forgot:

Incessant downloads
that program you needed to catch up on Iplayer.
That movie you got in an email.

10GB is about right fir a single person doing average stuff.

Apparently they just charge you for whatever you go over.

Is there a way I could check what my usage has been up to now?

I'm actually using only about 4 to 5 GB of my 20GB allowance with Plusnet.
The computer goes on in the morning and stays on until about midnight and
usually one or both of us are online at some time of the day or evening.
Emails come in and go out all the time, many of them with large attachments.
Web-surfing happens as and when required, including quite a bit of YouTube,
plus the occasional music download
Newsgroups, of course!
However, we don't download movies, use binary newsgroups or watch much (if
any) iPlayer stuff; all of the aforementioned can tend to eat up your
allowance quite a bit.

A good ISP (e.g. Zen) will provide a mechanism for monitoring your usage.

Just a bit. My current usage peaks around 150GB/month, and dips to about
30GB/month. The BT package would be laughable for me.

Well the iPlayer downloader reckons around 250mb per hour program, but
over 1GB an hour if you fancy those new high def programs.

iPlayer Downloader gives you low quality versions suitable for an
iPhone.

Standard quality BBC iPlayer streams are about 650MB per hour.

HD: about 1.3GB per hour.

Framing bytes, authentication bytes, address bytes, checksum bytes..is
this data? depends in your definition. Its sure not USER data.
