browstat and browmon

I am trying to fix browser issues but I just don't see what browmon and
browstat are doing to help me. I mean I see that they show what the
browsers are currently and the machines listed seem to be fine but my bigger
issue is what is the big use for these tools and how can I find out where
the problems are with the browsing? I have vlans and a router in between
them.
It is a 2003 domain with xp clients. I want to turn off wins and I know
this isn't the browsing issue but I don't see a need for it. Why do people
on 2000 and 2003 still run WINS?

Basically, people run WINS so that they can browse across routers! There
are other things that may stop working without WINS, but browsing will
probably be the first one you notice.

Without WINS, the DMB cannot find the SMBs (segment master browsers), so
it has no way to build a network-wide browse list.

Have you read KB188001 and 188305 ? KB150800 is also worth a look.

Thanks, that is what I have started finding. So is it better to just run a
single WINS server in somewhat small environment or place a WINS Server in
each vlan?

That's really up to you. One WINS server should be OK. If you set up
separate WINS servers, you would need to set them up to replicate.

Thanks, any idea why I am having so many machines promoting themselves to
browsers? I have 2 vlans and this is becoming a nightmare.
I am also getting a bunch of errors in the logs about netlogon 5805 and 5723

I got this from www.eventid.net for 5805:
"As per Microsoft: "If you do not find multiple instances of the computer
name, verify that replication is functioning for the domain that contains
the computer account". Refer to Active Directory Operations Overview for
more details."

This if from same place for 5723:
"I had this error after disabling a computer account that did not comply
with our naming standards. This event was logged once for every DC in the
site, and then NetLogon event 5805 (Access Denied). Enabling the account
solved the problem."

Thanks, I went through that list at every step and got passed results and
verified all is working.
I just read a post from another person about the NIC settings and I changed
my dc's so that dc1 points to itself in the NIC properties first and dc2
which is on a separate vlan 2nd in the nic properties.
That seems to have stopped the errors?
