I've inherited a windows 2003 server environment, and it's currently having
an issue with browsing. I've recently set up DNS and DHCP on the server, the
server can browse normally but clients cannot, I have noticed that there
isn't a backup brower, through browstat. I have checked that it has Netbios
over TCP/IP enabled on only one nic (it is a multihomed server) as I read
that that can be a problem. still not working. one computer for reasons I
can't explain, can see 3 computers... but not the server or the other 10
machines... it's a very small network, but still needs to get it working.

Assuming that only one NIC is connected to the subnet on which the clients
reside, try:

On the server, right click my Network Places and select Properties. Click
Advanced/Advanced Settings - make sure the Local Area Connection for the LAN
NIC is at the top of the binding order.

Thanks for the quick response, however I still am having difficulties...

I'm stumped on this one...

is there a way to force a machine to be the backup browser? rather than
leaving it up to elections?

You can't force a machine to be a backup browser, but you can prevent
machines you don't want to be browsers from being considered. You do that by
setting the MaintainServerList value to No in the registry.
