I have upgraded one of my NT.40 servers to Windows 2003
standard edition, after that, I can see only a few
computers in My network places! i have a mixed LAN
includes NT4.0, 2000 and 2003 servers, however all domain
controllers are w2k servers.
Does someone know how to fix that problem, because this
cause my backup to be failed.
thanks in advance-Rob

Windows 2003 should work much the same as W2k and NT in this department.
Browsing still depends on Netbios names and the computer browser service.
Make sure that all servers and clients are using Netbios over TCP/IP (not
Netbeui). Netbeui and Netbt build separate browse lists. You may need to use
the browstat utility from the support tools to troubleshoot the browser
service.

Dear Rob,

Thank you for your post.

This is a browsing issue. Bill Grant's suggestions are good. Please check
them.

Besides, please let me know the following:

1. Is there a WINS server in your network? Are all systems in your network
using the same server as their WINS server? Generally, we can configure a
WINS server to have all computers register their records to this WINS
server. In most cases, this method can resolve this kind of browsing issue.

2. Are all the machines in the same subnet?

3. If possible, please let me know your network topology.

4. On the new Windows Server 2003 system, please run the following command
to see which system is the master browser:

browstat status

Note: You can find the browstat tool in the Windows 2000 Support Tool
package.

5. Use the same command to check if the PDC Emulator is using the same
master browser.

6. Are the domain controllers\master browser multi-homed machines? (A
multi-home machine means a machine with more than one network adapters.)

Hello Rob,

Thank you for your update.

From the results of "browstat status", it seems the protocols installed on
the browser master and the problematic Windows Server 2003 system are
different. Please also install IPX/SPX protocol on the Windows Server 2003
machine, reboot it, and check if the problem still persists.

If the problem still persists, please let me know more information as
follow for further analysis:

1. Please run "ipconfig /all" on both the browser master and the
problematic Windows Server 2003 system, and post the results.

2. Please let me know if the problem occurs on other Windows systems. If
not, please pick a system which works well, run both "browstat status" and
"ipconfig /all" and let me know the results.

Thanks, and have a nice weekend!
