Browsing when connected to VPN

I use IE6 to browse the Internet through a local network connected to
an ADSL modem. I've just added a configuration to my Win98SE machine to
let me connect to a VPN using a dialup connection. Now whenever I
connect to the VPN I can't get IE to connect to the Internet via the
local network. I have to close the VPN connection first then IE will
use the local network and find its way out.

The Connections tab in 'Internet Properties' lists the VPN dialup
connection as the only dialup connection, but I've set it to 'Never
dial a connection'.

How can I configure things so that I can open the VPN connection but
still have IE go online through my regular local network at the same
time?

Set the option to not use remote default gateway.
