Browsing Computer across Subnets

I have a small network, Server 2003 SE and ten clients, 1 XP + 9 Win98. Two
subnets 192.168.1.1 & .2.1 with the XP machine at .2.248 and the Win98
machines on the .1.1 subnet. I can ping between subnets, WINS server is
running so is DNS and DHCP.

On the XP machine I can browse and see the server and XP machine names, but
not any of the Win98 machines. Is this a config issue and how can I fix it?
Regards

Hi Terry,

Are there any firewalls (or similar hardware or software devices) between
one and the other network? Is it possible that this device is filtering
browsing?

Could you make one subnet? If the clients are on same location and no
devices are between one and the other subnet you could change subnet mask
from 255.255.255.0 to 255.255.0.0 and all computers wuld be on same subnet.

Unless file and print sharing is enabled on the Win 9x
clients they will not show up in the list. This is not enabled
by default.

Hi Mike,
No devices in between just two NICs in the server. Interesting idea about
255.255.0.0 though.

Hi Michael,
file and print sharing is enabled on all clients.

The problem is probably linked to the fact that you are using the server
as the router between subnets. Multihomed browsers are a longstanding
problem, and your server is probably the domain master browser. (The W98
machines are using Netbios over TCP/IP?)

Try disabling Netbios over TCP/IP on one of the server interfaces. This
will force some other machine to become the segment browser for that
segment. The master browser should then be able to build a combined browse
list.

Thanks Bill,
I'll use the XPpro machine at .2.248 on the 192.168.2.1 subnet as that
segment browser as that one is allways on. That should allow the server to
do the rest. Thanks.
Regards

If the server acting as your router is the first or
only DC then you will have browsing problem.
It is most likely acting as the DMB or domain
master browser. If that is the case then the
router will not be able to merge the list it will
keep a seperate list for both endpoints.
