i keep getting this error on my second domain controller:
The browser service has failed to retrieve the backup list too many times on
transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{FC28C301-D409-4E4A-8C1D-1405655AECD1}. The
backup browser is stopping.

its frustrating because there is nothing wrong with the network. can anyone
help?

If you are happy to run with one browse master (and just want to get rid
of the message), disable the second server from maintaining a browse list.

To fix it properly, find out why your backup browser can't get a browse
list from your "first" DC. Are any of these DCs multihomed? Any duplicate
entries for browse masters in WINS?

server01, which is the pdc emulator does indeed have 2 nic's in it. but one
is disabled. and as far as WINS, we are a complete XP PRO shop as far as
clients, so WINS is not even installed.
assuming i never figure out the problem, how do i tell server02 to stop
being a backup browser? is it a registry tweak i imagine? although i would
like to know why the errors are there in the first place.
thank you!

If you are confident that you don't need Netbios names at all, you can
disable Netbios over TCP/IP on all systems, and do all your file sharing
using direct hosting. (See KB 315267). Then you won't need the browser
service at all, and will eliminate some LAN broadcasts.

If you stay with Netbt, your PDC emulator automatically becomes the
Domain Master browser. You can use the browstat utility (from the support
tools) to see what the browser service is doing.

Preventing a server from becoming a browse master is a registry change.

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Par ameters

The entry is MaintainServerList . To prevent it becoming a browser, change
Auto to No .
