Browser Issue

I'm have a browser issue. My domain controllers are ok I've set the master
browser for my 1st domain controller. However, my other servers keep loosing
the ability to browse the network. I do not have multihoming on anything
that was turned off and it seemed to have curtailed the issue. But the issue
is back.

There are errors in the event view the browser servers has failed to
retrieve the backup list too many times on transport ... netbt_tcpip _. The
backup browser is stopping.

Lastly, this domain was named (before I got here) xxx_domain. Could this be
part of my issue????

Are you using WINS? You should be, if you want to browse.
Have you stopped & disabled the Computer Browser service on all your
workstations, for good measure? (I do this regularly)

AFAIK, if your domain's NetBIOS name has an underscore, that's OK - it's
just a disallowed character in DNS.

Yes I'm using wins and I've disable browsing too. I can't seem to find a
reason for this issue.

Just on workstations...

I'd check through the event logs again.

Yes just on the workstations. It's very weird it looses the abilty to browse
and the it corrects itself. I can't seem to get a handle on this. I have
the browser service running on the servers.

Try posting an unedited ipconfig /all from a server & a workstation...

Ah. This is a problem. Underscores are not legal characters in DNS. If
you're using W2003 you can rename your domain, but it isn't a cakewalk (and
if you run Exchange, there are many additional caveats and complications).

This probably won't be related to your browsing problem - but it will be a
problem with your AD overall, and might be a fairly substantial one.

OK...some other questions....

* Why are you using public IPs on your LAN?

* Why do you have two default gateways listed in your workstation's IP
config?

* Is 135.11.12.10 another DC/DNS server in your domain?

NB: It's also slightly unorthodox to have server IPs that are in the middle
of your subnet/range. In a small network, your DHCP server should exclude
..1 - .something logical. You can then use xxx.xxx.xxx.1 for your
router/gateway, use another range of IPs within the excluded range for your
servers, etc.
I usually begin my DHCP scope range for workstations at .100. I realize you
inherited thissetup, , but thought I'd toss in my $.02.
