I have a newly acquired Gateway notebook and a Linksys WRT54GS router. Wired
to the router are 2 desktops. All 3 computers run XP Home. I use WPA TKIP
encryption. Each computer can access the shared folders on each other. One
desktop has a printer and all computers can print to it. The 3 computers can
all access the internet using Mozilla or IE thru the router and DSL modem.
Each computer runs Norton Internet Security, tho' different versions. The two
desktops can access email using Outlook Express and/or Thunderbird. The
PROBLEM is with the notebook. It will not access email even tho the account
setups are identical. It cannot find the host, just sits there doing an
endless search. The notebook will also NOT connect through FTP program, but
no problem with the wired desktops. The notebook will also NOT connect with
the wireless turned off, using a wired connection instead. I suspect the
problem must be something in the security settings but can't figure it out
since the browser works. Anyone have any ideas how to proceed? Thanks.

Certainly sound's as though these ports are being blocked. As a test on the
notebook you can temporarily disable Norton Personal Firewall and see if you
can then access these services.

If this is successful then you should reenable NPF and open ports 20 and 21
for FTP, port 110 for your incoming mail (POP3) and port 25 for your
outgoing mail (SMTP).

Disabling Norton firewall enabled the email and FTP progs. No end of
tinkering with Norton firewall allowed theemail/ftp to access the interent
unless the setting was set to lowest. Didn't make any sense as the 2 desktops
were fine at Medium. Uninstalled the email, ftp and norton firewall. then
installed the firewall again, folowed by the email and ftp progs. Everything
now works like it should on Medium.

It sounds like NPF doesn't know about your LAN. Run through the
configuration on the laptop, paying attention to the 'Home Network'
and 'Program Control' portions.
