How can I prevent my home computer (a Win 2003 DC) from
becoming a master browser on my work domain when I VPN
into our work network. My home domain keeps showing up
rather annoyingly in my work browse list. How can I stop
it? I have disabled NetBios on the VPN connection and on
the LAN connection on my home 2003 DC. I have also killed
the Computer Browser service. Any ideas

Thanks
JR

Sorry, I can't help but laugh.
The same thing happens to me and it's embarrassing. I
look through My Network Places when I'm at work and
there's my home nerwork domain name in the browse list!
I am sitting at a DC at home right now. About a month
ago, I completely turned off NetBIOS on the domain. I'm
going to make a VPN connection right now to my work
network and I'll be shocked if the domain shows up now in
the browse list.
Anyway, you can try editing the registry -
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Par ameters
Change the value of MaintainServerList to No and
IsDomainMaster to False.
Let me know if that works and I'll let you know what I see
at work.

OK,
I made an VPN connection to my work network and after
about 10 minutes, my home domain still wasn't showing in
My Network Places. That doesn't mean that I won't see it
there next time I look. In fact, I have a second domain
(W2K) at home and that one is still showing from a VPN
connection made about a week ago!
Here's the interesting part though -
I made a RDP connection to a machine at work while I had
the VPN connection going. From the remote machine, I was
able to find my home machine by typing \\machinename at
the Run prompt. So that means that my home machine was
still registering with the WINS server at work. It could
not have been using DNS because we are not using dynamic
DNS at work. Now I'm completely confused.

To stop any machine from being a browser.

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Par ameters\
MaintainServerList - REG_SZ

Range: Yes, No, and Auto
Default: Auto
If this value is No, this server is not a browser.
