Ok, After much research, reading through all of the browser problems in this
group, I still have problems on my domain. Here is the situation:

1 domain, 2 domain controllers on Windows 2003 mixed mode active directory.
2 subnets
Using WINS on DC1

Problem: Windows XP clients cannot see DC1 or DC2 in My Network places,
entire network, domain. They aslo cannot see clients on the other subnet that
they are not connected to. DC1 and DC2 do not see any clients at all.
Sometimes, they see one or two clients, but never stays.

So following all these posts about it, I verifed some things:
DC1 was the first domain controller. It is the PDCE (emmulator). Registry
setting IsDomainMaster = true, KeepMasterList = Yes. If I perform nbtstat -n
on DC1 it has the 1B code registered for netbios table. It also shows up in
the WINS table as the Domain Master Browser (DMB). Servers and clients do not
have a problem connecting to share by either ip address or netbios names.
When I perform a "browstat status" from DC1 it says its the master browser.
If I do it from a client on the same subnet, it says a random other client is
the MB. So, if I stop the computer browser service on the one machine, then
re-do the "browstat status", the MB will be a different client.

I am at a lost here. For all I can tell, WINS is working fine. DC1 says its
the MB and WINS says its the DMB. If I perform "browstat status" from DC2, it
said it was MB. I stopped the browser service on that machine, now it
reconizes DC1 as MB. But both DC1 and DC2 can only see themselves and each
other in the browse list.

Server are fixed ip's and client used reserved IP's that are obtained from
DHCP server (DC1). Client use NetBIOS over TCP/IP and are configured to use
the WINS server (also DC1).

So, Does anyone have any other suggestions???

Thanks

have you used browstat to check the maste browser status.
For more and other information, go to http://howtonetworking.com.

Don't send e-mail or reply to me except you need consulting services. Posting on MS newsgroup will benefit all readers and you may get more help.

I did, check post for results on server and client. Extensively testing and
followed suggestions in other posts.

What is acting as the router between the two subnets? Are either of the
DCs multihomed or used as remote access servers?

We have a Cisco router at both ends, with a pix firewall. But I am not
concerned about the other subnet right now. The other subnet is small with
only a few clients, no servers. I want to solve one thing at a time. So I
will relate problem...DC1 is DMB but clients are not seeing it or using it in
my network places. DC1 and DC2 can only see themseleves and each other in my
network places.

DC1 or DC2 are not a RRAS servers. I don't really know what multihomed means
so I cannot clarify that. browstat status on DC1 says its the MB. Do it from
a client, and it will just pick any other client.

Problem still on-going, need help!!

Multihomed just means more than one NIC. This can upset Netbios
(especially on DCs), because two IP addresses share the same name.

This seems odd behavior. It usually only happens if a master browser
can't be found (hence the question about remote access and multihoming,
which can cause this). There should be only one master browser on each
segment. Others should only be backup browsers or potential browsers (to
take over if a browser can't be found). Are all the machines domain members?
Do you see lots of browser election messages in the event log?

Browsing is complicated. For a description of browsing in a domain, see
KB 188001 . For troubleshooting, see KB 188305 . For the multihomed problem,
see KB 191611 .

It does have more than one NIC, but the other not being used is disabled. All
machines are domain memebers, only one domain, with not workgoups. I went
through the multihomed article, I don't have that problem. What's next?

Troubleshooting as described in KB 188305. There is no easy way. You
just have to go through it step by step. If browstat can't find the problem,
you may have to resort to a packet sniffer to see exactly what is going on.
On a single segment, it shouldn't be too complex.
