Hello Gurus,

Here is a tough one. While cleaning off numerous junk
files, adware, annoying pop-up programs and other litter,
I have managed to break the the internet access on one of
our local PCs. I am able to succesfully navigate to
other pc's on the lAN so I know I have physical
connectivity. In addition, I can ping the IP address of
external servers such as the two DNS servers that comcast
provides. I have tried reloading both windows ME over
the top of the existing configuration. I have also
reloaded the entire IE6 package which I was accomplished
by download from Microsoft onto another PC and then
copying the installation/setup files to the broken
system. So far still no luck so i am suspecting registry
problems.

So my plea for help is to anyone who knows the registry
well enough to help me diagnose this problem further or
suggest alternate methods to fix my sick ME machine.

Thanks
Jon

If I understand correctly, the problem is that DNS resolution isn't
working for external servers such as web sites. If that's the case,
try this fix, even if you don't use dial-up networking:

1. Un-install Internet Connection Sharing (if installed).
2. Un-install Dial-Up Networking. Don't reboot.
3. Delete registry key HLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2
4. Re-install Dial-Up Networking. Reboot.
5. Re-install ICS (if desired).
