Broadcast SSID Problem.

Hi All,

I don't broadcast SSID on my home router and could not get my daughters new
Vista laptop
connected. Started to broadcast SSID on the router and it connected but the
connection is lost when I reset the router to not broadcast SSID. have tried
manually setting it up without success.

Another XP laptop connects OK in the same circumstances.

Any ideas please?

Bill, NOT broadcasting the SSID isn't recommended as a security
measure. You should be using WPA2 (or at least WPA) which will keep
others off your network. Anyone that really wants to find a non
broadcasting SSID will be able to.

Barb, have already looked it up. Thanks for the heads up. Will look at
changing to WPA asap.

However I still have the problem with the Vista laptop!!

1. have you changed the SSID name from the default name that it
shipped with?

2. what router (brand, model, hardware revision) and version of
firmware? have you checked for a firmware upgrade?

3. does the Vista computer have the latest driver for the wireless?

Yes have changed the SSID from the default.
3Com Office Connect ADSL Wireless 11g Firewall Router.
Firmware not bang up to date but checked recently and nearly there and
latest fixes do not address anything that I have a problem with.
Vista laptop (Dell) has latest driver for wireless. In fact everything I
have checked, i.e. sound, video, BIOS have all been up to date.

is this

the router you have? or is it a different model (#?)- looks like the
last firmware was June 2005. The only things I can recommend are:

1. unbind IPv6 which for sure this router does not understand
2. update to the last released firmware
3. if this Dell 1505 is an Intel NIC, it is possible it will not
connect at all unless you use WPA2 or WPA-AES given the bugs with
the Intel based drivers.

Router was not quite right, this is it.

The laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1521. Dunno whether the wireless is Intel or
not, but probably is. Will check it out.

try the April 2007 firmware (see the note about resetting to factory
defaults). there may be some undocumented compat tweaks for Vista in
this, considering the date.
