What happens when you dial your number from e.g. your mobile or someone
else's phone? Do you get a ringing tone (and your phone doesn't ring),
NU tone, silence, or something else?

Is your phone plugged into the master socket or an extension? Have you
tried plugging the phone into the test socket on your master socket?

Have you tried 2 different corded phones into the test socket behind the
front plate of the main socket (NTE).
If you have then its a BT problem.
See http://www.telephonesuk.co.uk/images/NTE5_BT_front.jpg for what an NTE
looks like

OK.

So the line's NOT 'dead'. You just said it says "your mail box is full".

Can I suggest you stop to think and then express yourself accurately and clearly
on a point by point basis ?

No, I think you are confusing two different symptoms:

1. From a phone connected to the line (even to the test socket) he gets no
dialling tone and maybe not even a click.

2. If he rings the line from elsewhere, he hears a recorded message "the
mailbox is full".

It is perfectly feasible for a localized line fault to knock your
analogue line out but only have a small affect on your broadband

Your broadband number?
You don't get another number with broadband (unless you have a VOIP
service - you didn't mention that).
Perhaps there's a mismatch there somewhere?

George
