Broadband without BT phone line - is it possible? I know of Telewest, of
course, but is anything else available?

NTL do the same in their cable area (its the same company as Telewest now,
but the "deals" seem to vary depending on when and who you sign up with).
You can get the phone line bundled in various broadband / digital TV /
mobile deals - mine is supposedly rent free with the Internet / TV package.

Some LLU suppliers use a BT line for broadband, but also provide the phone
service themselves - (only one i know of is Bulldog, which you should be
able to get via Pipex).

None of the 5 locations I tried have service. Where do they provide
service?

As other have said, there are generally only two [1] (physical) ways to get
a line provided to your property.
These are:
1. A normal copper telephone line, provided by Openreach (part of BT). This
can be ordered direct from BT itself or from another telecom/broadband
supplier as part of a package. Openreach still connect up the line from the
BT exchange to your premises though.
2. A direct connection from one of the Cable companies (NTL/Telewest).
You'll find that these are only available in areas of large/dense
population.

[1] In some remote locations, service can sometimes be exceptionally
provided by satellite or radio link.

The new 3G cards (with HSDPA) are marketed as "3G Broadband" by the
likes of Vodafone.

Its WiMAX - PCCW and Pipex are the only Telecos in the country that
have licences for it. One of them is trialling it in Milton Keynes, or
was - I really can't remember.

If you can get BB via phone or Cable then thats usually the cheapest and
quickest option. It does not have to be a "BT" line, other suppliers, will
take over the line management. (Onetel used to do this. Not sure now they
are part of CPW)

Well as others have said there is also NTL but I gather they are merging
with Telewest.

There are other solutions but in general they are more expensive and have
poorer performance.

You can have a satellite link almost anywhere, but the long distance the
signal has to travel means you get high latency. This means that things like
Voiceover IP don't work well. Even ordinary browsing may appear slow.. Its
also a lot more expensive that Cable or DSl

There is also 3G telephony, which is more like "midband" than "broadband".
("three" claim 7 x 56k = 392K) and the tarrif is a cost effective £45 for a
1 gig download.

Then there are various wireless solutions. At present these tend to be used
in areas where ADSL over a phone line is not available, to distribute say an
"e1" (leased dedicated 1 meg line) connection. I guess these are also slow
because every one in a village is sharing a connection...

Small correction - an E1 circuit is a 2Mbps line (though it may be used
to provide a 1Mbps service).
