Broadband Supply

Hi,

I am looking at advice on the best broadband service I can receive. I
originally had HomeHighway that was provided from a main exchange via a
smaller exchange that directly serves the property.

This configuration caused BT Wholesale/BT Yahoo! no end of trouble
providing the service and in the end I had to revert the HomeHighway to
an analogue PSTN line from the local exchange. This gave me a new
number.

The new line will be a data line and there is already an existing voice
line installed at the address. When my converted HomeHighway line came
through on the availability checker it reported I was "Very Unlikely"
to receive a broadband service!

When I check the other "personal" line that is served from the same
exchange (takes the same route to the exchange - rural location and
confirmed by the BT Engineer) it claims that 1Mbit is available!

BT have activated Broadband successfully on the ex-HomeHighway line at
512kbit today, however I really would like 1mbit as it claims to be
available on the other line in the same house!

I have a Draytek Vigor 2600 router and below is the output from the
ADSL status command. My understanding is that the quality of the
existing HomeHighway->Broadband converted line should be easily capable
of a stable 1mbit supply.

Can anyone confirm - I am 2.75km from the exchange (direct route) and
3.56km from the exchange by road.

Get NTL broadband, more reliable. Though, do NOT switch your phoneline to
NTL! It's only the broadband that is more reliable.

This is a joke, yes? My NTL telephone line was never any problem. Their
cable modem service was so unreliable I have just ditched them and
switched to ADSL.

The problems I had with NTL were slow connections (my local area was
over subscribed), packet loss (re the over subscription) & the blocked
ports with their infamous proxy servers. When I had 512k the real
speeds were in the high 300k range, when it was supposed to be 600k I
got in the high 400k & when it was boosted to 750k I at last got 512k
speeds, pity it was the month before I jumped out of the frying pan &
into the Plusnet fire, but never mind. Despite what anybody (even me)
says PN is still better than NTL (for my needs) even on the usenet
front, it's just not the service I signed up for & received just over a
year ago.

ISDN normally very reliable.

Why? Need not have done.

Sure now? Maybe one is straght through and the other via a concentrator.

The most reliable form of communication is still registered letter
post.

Depends on the configuration of the exchange equipment, sometimes (well
occaisionally) a number change is required

Different line, different routing. I've got some PCP's (green box at
side of road, normally with a number on it, if it's not been painted
over by the local authorities) where there can be as much as 10-15 dB
difference between different cables running from there to the exchange.
The trick is finding the 'good' (lower loss) cables

Ross,
sorry to note that the folks here ignored your question and launched
straight into the usual stupid bun fight - no, no mine IS bigger...
All started from the idiotic suggestion that you should switch to NTL,
clearly unable to comprehend that 'rural location' = abs. no chance of cable
connection.

Anyway, to answer your question, with attenuation of 46dB and SNR Margin of
20dB you should have NO problem getting 1Mb/s and maybe even 2Mb/s which BT
says should be 43dB.

I have 1Mb/s Plus.Net BB on att 51.5dB and SNR of 11dB (and often less)
according to my Draytek 2600VG.
Regards

Martin,

Thanks very much for your informative response. I have placed a manual
order for 1mbit with BT Yahoo! so hopefully they should provide this
services.

Thanks again.
Ross
