Hi all (newbie here so be gentle!)

Just ordered broadband from Kingston Communications and was told in the
spiel that the pc needs to be no more than two meters away from the socket.
I though, how the hell do other people manage!?? So what do i need to do
folks for the 6th October when it gets connected?

Thanks in adavnce

Chris

Well, mine is..... a lot more than 2m away from the master socket, there are
extensions running through the roof, splitters, more extensions, I've
probably exceeded the REN for my line, but never mind.

I think if anything, they may be refering to the digital bit of the
connection, between the adsl modem (or router, whatever your having) and the
microfilter. My wire to the microfilter is only 1m long.
ADSLNation (www.adslnation.com) say you can safely run up to 20m between
your modem and your microfilter.

Normal telephone extensions do have a limit, but it's great enough that most
sain people (as long as they don't own buckingham palace) shouldn't have a
problem with the phone line extension limit.

Hope that's not confusing for you, I didn't type this message in a linear
fashion :-)

Dont' worry.

Mines at the end of a 7 metre extension lead, and one pc's on a 15 m
network cable from the router

Are they suplpying the modem? perhaps it only has a 2M wire?

Try re-wording the requirement thus:
"There must be a telephone socket within 2 metres of the PC."

So in answer to your "...what do i need to do..." query, "make it
so". If there isn't a phone socket in range, get yourself an
extension lead or fit an extension phone socket, assuming relocating
your PC isn't an option.

Thanks to you all for the info. I did say to the woman that i would be
buying
a modem of my own (probably a router so i can use it for my PS2 aswell)
but i guess that she was just reading the spiel about the £85 modem they
wanted to supply me!!

Thanks again.

In my old house I'd about 20m of extension phone cable.

2m is around the max safe length of a USB cable. Almost certainly that
advice assumes you've a USB modem.

Its measured in miles. How far is your house from the telephone
exchangte? You think an extra 20metres matters?
