I have a few questions I need some help on as im on the verge of
signing up with Nildram's basic service.

Firstly, there is no SMTP server included and Im not sure I fully
understand what this means. I know its related to sending out emails
but how important is this? I have a POP3 email account and as far as I
know I can still use Outlook Express to compose and send emails so it
shouldn't make much of a difference or is this not the case?

I need a modem and they can provide a Zyxel Prestige 630 USB Modem for
just over £50. I was wondering if its any good or whether I should go
for anything else that falls within the same price range?

Cheers

You do need a SMTP server to send out emails.

As for USB modems, one of the ISP's is advertising free connection & modem
at the moment, so perhaps check out their offer -- I can't remember which
one, but the ads are on the TV and radio.

You need an SMTP server to send emails and access to their own server will
be included in Nildram's basic package.

However, you cannot run your own SMTP server on that service - which for
most people is for totally unneeded (and for you from the sounds of it - if
you dont know what it is you don't need to worry)

You can get other modems - either USB/Internal or even a router for less
than Nildram are charging so I would shop around.

Regards
Sunil

They seem to be having problems though - see other related posts
