Hi,

I am in the process of moving my mothers broand provider from BT Yahoo
(was paying ~£24/m) to either Pipex, Plus Net, or Zen. I was edging
towards PlusNet until someone recommended looking on this newsgroup!

She is not a heavy user of the internet, email, exchanging photos with
family, browsing and the occasional MSN Messenger to keep in touch
with other family members. She wants to reduce the cost per month brom
what she is paying, and is not bothered about having a super-quick
connection speed. Any recommendations?

Thanks.

With those requirements - light usage, low price - I'd still recommend
PlusNet. I'm on the Broadband PAYG service (£15/month, 1 GB/month limit,
£1.50/month surcharge for extra GB/month) and I've had no problems. That's
for a 2 Mbit/sec connection.

If I downloaded more data, this tariff would not be cost-effective. Most of
the complaints with PlusNet seem to be with their Premier service which
allows far more data to be downloaded but restricts the transfer rate of
certain traffic. I'm certainly wary of the side-effects of upgrading to that
tariff.

If you sign up with PlusNet, perhaps you'd like to mention my username
martinunderwood as the person who referred you.

which makes your recommendation worthless at best, and spam. I suggest
you read the PusNet T&C page concerning spamming for referral credits

Eclipse Home Broadband would be a good choice for a very light user.

http://www.eclipse.net.uk/index.cfm?...sidentialintro

£14.99 a month with 1GB transfer quota which a light user wouldn't even
scratch.

I'd have a look at Metronet, Eclipse, Pipex and Newnet.

They all offer PAYG packages with a base amount of transfer included,
and you pay if you go over that.

The Newnet package is the cheapest 2mbps that I've seen with a "proper"
ISP but it depends on if a 1gb cap is enough.

If she's migrating you should be able to go to most providers and be on
a monthly contract so if her needs change, moving around is easy.

cheers,
Paul

I hadn't realised that the T&Cs said that mentioning your user name to
encourage people to use it in referrals was unacceptable. I was only copying
what I've seen various other posters in this newsgroup do in the past.

Sorry if it caused offence.

My recommendation still stands: for light usage, Force 9 is excellent IMHO.

I'll second Eclipse Home Broadband, never any problems and cheap for
the lighter user.
