My exchange is being ADSL enabled next month and I want to set up a PC
to router/modem (wire) to laptop (wireless) network at home. Any
recommendations for gear to use - or avoid - and suppliers?

Vist the adslguide.co.uk and check out the suppliers rankings as
voted for by users --- in thr bottom half lurk BT, AOL Virgin
Wanadoo/Freserve Bulldog Tiscali -- expect Bt to sink even lower after
the capping bonbshell.
The ones worth thinking about are those from ClaraNet upwards ---
Demon Pipex Zen Zetnet ------ all have good reputations.

I've been doing similar research for Broadband in September. I'll be
sticking with BTYahoo for the ISP as I've been with a while and had no
real complaints.

So far I've been warned off Netgear and will probably go for Belkin or
Linksys for the bits. Watford seem to have good Belkin prices and
Braodbandbuyer good Linksys ones at the moment.

Any help?

Brian

Cheap "white box" routers work flawlessly mine a "Mentor" brand with a
Conexant chipset has been running for flawlessly for 2 years 24/7 with
only a handful of reboots that were actually required. A client of mine
has a single port version and has had no problems.

Who warned you off Netgear then? I have three Netgear ADSL Modem/routers
with wireless at home and at work, and they have run 100 percent flawlessl
for 8 months. Never been re-booted since the day they were installed. So
whoever warned you off the gear, obviously doesn't know what they are
talking about. The units in use here are DG834G with wireless... excellent
units.

Regards
James

Bummer, I thought I'd one brand ruled out. It looks as if it's back
to what I can find cheapest then. Or are the colours diffferent in
different brands? Still I've still a ouple of months to make a
decission.

I am using BTs Voyager 2000 wireless system which has been no problems.

My Desktop has the USB 1010 (wireless) fitted although you can hardwire as
you prefer and 2 household laptops are fitted with Intel 1200 wireless
cards.

Obviously, I'd recommend my own business for the cable 8^)

For the wired card(s), I'd happily recommend 3com - they are compatible
with everything and just do not go wrong.

You might consider getting an ethernet ADSL modem rather than a router -
they're slightly cheaper and generally there's less that can go wrong.
That means you can go point-to-point wireless to the laptop, although
the downside is you'd need your desktop box up and running for your
laptop to pass through it to the outside world, which may not suit your
needs.

Wireless kit is pretty heavily dependent on the environment so do try
and borrow some before splashing out, just to make sure the signal
strength covers the kind of range you're after.

HTH,

Pete

Are there any significant disadvantages in using the USB modem BTY
will provide me with point-to-point wireless for the PC / laptop?
Obviously a cheaper option still. I won't be a heavy user we just
want the ability for my wife and I to use the net at the same time,
use the laptop in more than one room and a spin-off of WiFi capability
for the laptop for our travels.

Before you get a USB ADSL modem, I would google and check for previous
threads on tthe subject. A lot of people have had bad expeirences with USB
modems, usually because of power problems with certain motherboard
chipsets.
