Finally decided to go Broadband.

Not got any cable services in this area so going to have to obtain by
other means.

BT seems to suit. However...

Their Yahoo/BT package only deals with dynamic IP addresses. Got a
website under development and will eventually need to upload to web
host. (Don't want to use the web space the company provides).

Yahoo/BT tell us that without a static IP address this will be
problematic. Yahoo/BT don't do static IP addresses.

Is there a way round this? Can anybody direct to a more suitable option?

TIA

Marcie

Well you can check out http://www.no-ip.com/

But probably better to check out someone like zen or plusnet who will give
you a static.
Might save some money too.

If you want to upload a web site to a hosting company of some kind and allow
them to store the site having a dynamic address is not a problem.

Having a static IP address would only really be necessary if you planned to
host the web site yourself on your ADSL link.

Have a look at the forums at http://www.adslguide.org.uk/ for a wide variety
of ISP's including those which are:

a) cheaper
b) come with a static IP as standard if thats what you want.

Regards
Sunil

I think plusnet will be your best option, cheeper than Yahoo/BT, static IP
as standard, loads of other extras for website hosting, MySQL,PHP,CGI etc.
www.plus.net you are more than welcome to use my user name: badsell as your
referer.

checkout www.adslguide.org for other user opinions and other ISP options.

May I just point out that the whole nature of ADSL (Asymetric, 512kbs
upstream, 256kbps downstream) isn't good for hosting. The ratio is the wrong
way. I'm not saying it's not possible however, it's perfectly possible.
If you are serious about hosting, you should be looking at SDSL (Symetric
DSL), Cable or a commercial grade internet uplink.
Before you comit yourself to hosting a web site off your ADSL, do a few
tests first. Get some mates to download web pages from your connection at
the same time and check out the speed.
I always said I'd host servers off my ADSL but the speed just dosn't
compaire to having a server in a datacenter, either co-lo or shared.

If you decide to go ahead, I use DynDNS, like all the others it gives you a
static DNS name. You run a little client on your desktop (I'm using DynDNS
updater) It checks your IP address against the one that DynDNS has on
record, and updates it if it's changed to keep your DNS name alive.

Like a previous poster pointed out, Zen, Eclipse and some other providers
hand out Static IP's or the BT Business packages have optional Static IP's.

One further note on Static IP's and security: if your computer comes under
attack, you can't disconnect and re-connect to stop the attack cauz your IP
will be the same. Hackers know where to find you, they can come back again
and again and there is nothing to stop them. Secure a Static IP system well
:-)

There are two types of solution available for this:

1. Use an ISP that offers static IP addresses with their ADSL offering.
Many ISPs offer this - we do.

2. Use a dynamic DNS service to map a static host name to your current IP
address. There are lots of companies offering this service and you will,
no doubt, receive lots of recommendations.

This is what I have done:

1. Signed ub to BT broadband... Just the broadband package no frills etc.
2. Registered domain name at http://www.lowcostnames.co.uk/
3. Created an account at http://www.zoneedit.com/
4. Set the IP Address's of the www.yoursite.com & yoursite.com to my machine
IP address at zoneedit
5. At Lowcost names set the Nameservers to zoneedit Nameservers.

My Machine is on all the time, therefore my connection is also, my IP
address hasnt changed for over 3 months, if my IP address does change, it is
VERY quickly changed at zoneedit.

I am using Apache web server
http://www.apache.org/dist/httpd/bin...no_ssl.msi.md5
( http://tinyurl.com/skqv ) . Runs well on Xp. I have uninstalled Microsoft
IIS as I dont trust it. (IMO)

I use zonealarm as a firewall.

Zoneedit allows multiple email address forwarding, you can set this for your
web mail account e.g hotmail.

This is working really well. have a look www.nj2t.net/personal

This may not be everybodys ideal, it's what I have done and it works for
me.. ;-)

Cheers
