I've just got braodband and know that broadband users are far more prone to
being attemptedly hacked. My question is, is it possible for the hacker to
hack free phone calls from my broadband line if they successfully get in?

Very unlikely but technically possible. They would have to install a
program running on your PC which would create a VoIP gateway into the
telephone system.

Quite a novel idea for a trojan

It's probably easier to hack into corporate switchboards and use their
call diversion features to get free outgoing calls... DISA fraud is
quite old and widespread.

That would only be possible if you also had a modem in your computer hooked
up to the voice line unless I am mistaken. You can't make voice calls
through a data socket can you?

If you had VoIP software running with credit on a call-to-landline system
then they could launch that and use up the credit but most of the time
these days broadband compromises are viruses and worms with a specific
purpose in mind (spam/replication/DDoS)

Yes, I am sure you are right, there is no way to do that purely in
software. But a lot of people do have modems, and I bet most won't
unplug them from the BT socket when they go BB!

I believe it does require the PBX to have an external config port
which is insecure, or have a means of directly dialling an internal
extension and remotely configuring call forwarding on the extension.

There are several ways of doing it, depending on how the PBX is
configured, none of which I will mention below!
