Broadband disconnection problem

I have Orange Broadband connection and periodically I get a disconnection
and a dialup window appears which is trying to connect through
Miniport(PPPOE). Then Error 678 Remote computer did not respond.
I then try rebooting and my connection is made good again.
What is causing this and can I cure it?
I have XP and Outlook Express

you could try using PPPoA instead of PPPoE, and routers are generally
more stable than USB modems.

Yah PPPoA is the UK default. Try replacing the modem driver - it may be that
its passing a duff command as part of some idling power-down.

Yes, get a decent ADSLRouter and use ethernet instead of useless USB.

Thanks.to you and others for your help. I have a router which is supplied by
Orange and has never given me a problem until recently.
Where do I change PPPoE to change it to PPPoA>
I have no idea where to look

It sounds like something has created a 'dial up networking' setting
and not using ethernet or wireless (whichever you had been using
before). Since you have a router, then using "connect via LAN"
is the sort of thing to look for in the internet options on the
"Connections" tab. Check "Internet Options..." on MS IE's Tools
menu, and report back how things are set up... it seems not to use
your router, as things stand, at least to me.

sounds like you've set up the PC wrong as you should never get a
dialup error message like "Error 678 Remote computer did not respond."

What connections do you have in "Network connections" ?

IE Settings
Under Dialup & VPN setting- Broadband(Default) listed and Dialup whenever
a network connection is not present
Should I have selected LAN Setting with Automatic detection of settings?
Note I have two PCs networked

Further to my last message I decided to delete the Dialup setting and I
clicked LAN with Automatic settings detection.

Everything seems OK now

If it happens again, set the "Never dial a connection".
