When I went to cable from dialup, I didn't have to do
that. I installed the SurfBoard modem per their
instructions and the Ethernet card per theirs using their
software. Once both were installed, I set the network
parameters as prescribed by Comcast and got an immediate
connection.
Since then I've reinstalled Win98SE once. But even then
all I had to do was reset the network parameters (Icon in
the Control Panel), release, and renew via WINIPCFG and
the connection was again made.
