Broadband connection dropping when computer left on standby?

I run Windows 98 SE and was with Blueyonder broadband for three years and
always left my computer on standby without problems. I recently moved and
taken 600k broadband with NTL. All was fine for a couple of weeks but now,
for some reason, I am unable to connect to either the internet or outlook
express after leaving the computer on standby for more than 30 mins. I have
to re-start each time which is very time consuming. The computer states
that it is trying to detect proxy settings and then the 'page cannot be
found' pops up.

NTL say that the problem lies with my computer and has nothing to do with
their brodband service, but since I am also having intermittent problems
with the TV (both through set-top box) I find this dubious. They suggested
> that I play about with the start-up items, but I am reluctant to do this

in case I make the situation worse. I was also advised to re-install my NIC
card (from my Blueyonder days) but have no idea how to do this.

Could anyone make any polite and easy to follow suggestions please, or point
me to the correct newsgroup if this is not it?

Many thanks.
Jane.

Unfortunately, some devices simply aren't compatible with power saving
modes. Sounds like you've found one of them.
