Broadband always on?

I have Wanadoo Broadband - before you all jump down my throat and tell me it
serves me right please read the rest!

I run the BB on both a PC with Win98se and a laptop with Win2000 swapping
the Speedtouch 330 USB modem between the two.

After a while the PC reports "out of system resources" and the only way to
get over this is to restart the PC, sometimes it will restart after using
the Shut Down command and other times I have to resort to the restart button
on the front of the case. The problem only occurs after I have been on the
internet, the PC will run all day without running out of system resources if
I haven't been connected.

I can run the laptop all day without problems, even if I've been connected.

Any ideas to a solution?

Cheers
Steve

If you have a leptop & PC its a idea to concider a home network, with a
router, will fix this problem...

Ditch the USB modem (which is almost certainly the cause of your problem)
and get a combined ADSL Modem and Router. *Both* PCs can then be connected
to the internet at the same time, and you won't run out of resources. [Both
PCs will, of course, need network cards in order to connect to the router].

Sounds like a memory leak on the Win98 machine.

With a USB modem the PC is having to process every data packet itself,
and while Windows 2000 may cope with this, I guess Win98 doesn't
handle it so well.

Get an external router and I suspect your problem will go away.

Jake

Thanks for that, the Laptop is my Companies so I don't want to start messing
about with its innards. Is there an alternative way to network them?

You shouldn't have to mess with the innards! Does the laptop have an
ethernet port? Does it connect to a network when you're in the office? If
so, the chances are that it picks up an IP address automatically from your
company's DHCP server. Your router will act as a DHCP server, and give it an
IP address when you're at home. Have a look at the laptop's config and see
what Workgroup it belongs to. Set up your other PC(s) to belong to the same
workgroup - then all the PCs on your home network will be able to see each
other.

Come back if you need more help.

The laptop has never been connected to a network as I work on the road all
the time and send my information by email.
I have used Soft Sandra to look into the goings on in the Laptop and it
doesn't report a network card.

Cheers
Steve

In that case, does the laptop have a spare PCMCIA slot? You should be able
to get a network card which will plug into that. I think you could *even*
get a USB-based network card if all else fails - but I'd go the PCMCIA route
if at all possible.
