BRAS profile issue

I have a question about BRAS profiles and the 'learning' mechanism. I have
broadband from BT but my line is 8.6Km to the exchange. ADSL just would not
work despite lots of attempts by BT but ADSL Max does work because it
negotiates better at lower speeds (or so the engineer said). When Max was
first installed 3 months ago it ran at 480Kbps line speed but has gradually
climbed to 704K and often gives 740K. This gives a very acceptable
500Kbit/sec IP throughput and actual data rates not far off that.

I'm running with a Home Hub modem/router but the reliability just isn't up
to scratch and I'm having to reboot it almost daily to restart an ether
port. If I were to swap it out for a Netgear WG834GT which I bought last
year and which I think would be more reliable, would I continue to get the
704K speed? I understand that this is controlled by the BRAS profile which
is stored in the exchange but is this only a function of line bahaviour or
would I destroy the BRAS by swapping the modem? Any insight into BRAS
appreciated.

Provided the Netgear synced with the exchange at the same speed then you
will get the same IPdata rate. You are no more likely to cause trouble with
the digital line management and BRAS profile by trying the Netgear than you
are are rebooting the Home Hub each day.

If you don't get as good a sync and data rate / BRAS profile is affected
then simply swap back tothe Home Hub and at worst it will take 3 days for
the BRAS profile to increase back to the old IP data rate.

You may find that ADSL2+ router may be able to connect and maintain higher
speed.
Look for the award wining TI chipset, it is in the later Zyxel routers
(2602HW) and Draytek 2800, and maybe others.

Good Advice

A friend of mine on a long line was getting 384kbps on his USB Modem,
and he swapped over to a Belkin 7633 and he's now getting around 980kbps

I am not so sure...

I have a BT business Hub (aka 2Wire 2700HGV) on ADSL MAX that syncs reliably @ 2500 on a 5.5km line.
I recently tried a Draytek 2800 thinking it would be at least as good. Not so - the draytech would
only sync @ 1600. I tried the various flavours of firmware but it made no odds.

IMO the 2700 is an excellent device. Not sure which chipset it uses
