I am having problems setting up my friends cable router, she has bought
a new laptop onto which I have installed the blueyonder broadband disc,
when I plug the modem into the laptops ethernet port it works fine,
however when I try to set up the new netgear router, the point at which
you connect the blue cable from one of the lan ports on the router to
the ethernet port on the laptop, nothing happens, I have tried swapping
cables and if i plug the live ethernet cable from the modem into one of
the lan points, it is recognised, I thought it may have been a faulty
router but when i set it up on my own blueyonder broadband it worked
fine, I have rung blueyonder and they can't see why it shouldn't work,
neither can netgear! Blueyonder no longer need the mac address
registered beforehand and I am now at a loss as to what to do. Has
anyone else experienced something similar, and could help me get this
working?

Many thanks

first thing - when you connect your friend's pc to the router, does the
link light on both ends come on? If not, maybe there's a cable issue.

(I assume that both ends have link lights)

My preferred sequence to install a router in a cable / adsl environment
where there wasn't one is as follows:

1) release any dhcp lease from the computer[1]
2) turn off the computer
3) turn off the cable modem
4) disconnect the computer from the cable / adsl modem
5) connect the computer to a lan port on the router
6) power the router
7) power the computer
8) check computer to router communication and router config, this can be
done without having the modem connected
9) shut down the computer
10) power off the router
11) connect the router wan port to the cable / adsl modem
12) power on the cable / adsl modem
13) wait for status lights on the cable / adsl modem to settle down
14) power on the router
15) power on computer
16) check computer through router to cable / adsl modem communication
17) check router config again - router status should show wan ip address
assigned by either the cable / adsl modem dhcp or the isp dhcp server
18) connect additional wired computers
19) set up any wireless networking parameters and clients

[1] "the computer" is the one originally connected to the cable / adsl modem

Notes:

1. stages 9/10 and 14/15 may be overkill
2. stage 1 can be crucial
3. at stage 8 you may (if the router supports it) clone the mac address
of the pc onto the router wan port, this can help with network
registration after re-powering the cable / adsl modem
4. look on

helpful ip addresses etc for cable modem info,

manufacturer sites for router guides & info etc

Connect the router.
Reset the cable modem by unplugging it from the mains for 30 seconds.
Then power up the router.

The power switch doesn't power it down on some of the cable modems.. it just
turns the lights off.

sudden thought

If you used a "clone mac" feature when the router was connected to your
pc at your home, you need to unclone it or replace the cloned mac with
her pc mac - the isp network dhcp might be getting a bit upset if it
sees the same mac address from two lines.
