Blueyonder wireless problem

Hi, hope someone can help.
I've a Blueyonder 1MB internet account with the wireless package
which I use with a desktop pc. This worked fine until I tried to use my
girlfriend's Powerbook on the network to access the internet. Having
discovered from Telewest that this was not possible with the Netgear
router supplied (by them) as part of my wireless package (this will
only support one PC device at a time) I went out and bought a new
Netgear router and PCI card.

As with the old router I plugged this in to the set top box and set up
the network (with some help from a knowledgeable friend). Everything
worked fine initially on both the PC and Powerbook and the wireless
network continues to work fine however I keep losing the internet
connection. This can be restored for a short period by turning the
power off the router and back on again. At first (yesterday) I had
internet access all day but now it doesn't appear to last any more
than 15 mins or so.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem may be? I'm presuming that
the Ethernet output from the set top box is simply a connection to a
modem inside? Is this expecting the original netgear router?

Thanks in advance,

Phil

That sounds unlikely to me. Your original router should have worked I would
have thought. Unless Telewest modify them?

there is no modem in the router. That is in the set top box. The connection
between the stb and the router is just standard ethernet networking. Hence
the name router - it just routes between the two networks, yours and
telewests.

There shouldn't be any real problem with your set up, but I have a stand
alone cable modem myself so I' not sure about the ins and outs of using the
set not box as the modem.

Sorry just another thought. As unlikely as it might seem it could be the new
router at fault.
Just noticed you're also in sheffield! Nice to see someone local.

Odd. They must put custom firmware on them or something, in which case you
could have flashed it and made it multi-user.

When you say you keep losing the network connection, are you referring to
wireless access, or does the Cable light on the cable modem start flashing?

If it's the wireless access, unfortunately, that's the nature of the beast.
They share their frequency spectrum with other radio users like microwave
ovens, bluetooth and other unlicensed industrial, scientific and medical
users/devices. So there's no guarantee of the connection ever working, or
working 100%. Hence you not having to pay to use the spectrum.

Try eliminating the cable network side of things by plugging your PC
straight into the cable box.

Telewest do modify the routers yes, it states on the bottom on the
router that it will only support one PC. I know, strange.

just in case this was the problem I took the router back last night and
got it replaced with a new one. I've only had a short while to play
around with it but so far so good...

the network connection as far as I could tell seemed fine. Not sure how
relevant this is but you can reliably bring about the problem by
downloading a largish file or graphics intensive web page. Is it normal
for the Network internet light on the front on the router to be yellow
and flash irregularly?

I think TW do modify the firmware - it be very handy for people in a
similar position to me (i.e., wanting to use more than two computers on
the network but with the TW wireless package) if there was info on how
to flash the router to get around this problem without buying new
equipment.

Its an access point and its modded by the manufacture very well so you can't
do anything with it no matter how hard you try.
