I am experimenting with internet connection using a mobile phone and
bluetooth.

I appreciate the range of BT limits the security issues but am wondering
what precautions other users implement.

Would anyone trust banking transactions via Bluetooth.

I don't implement any. The paired bond is quite secure.

If you mean would I use online banking while using my phone as a modem
connecting to the computer via bluetooth to access the internet, yes I
would.

there's a few scare stories in the media about bluetooth. all the
demos i've seen on TV have been based around (long since fixed)
weaknesses in the way BT security was implemented in certain older
phones such as the Nokia 6230 and some obsolete Sony Ericssons etc.
These allowed bluesnarfing (copying of data off phone to nearby laptop
etc), but no handset currently on the market should have these
problems.
However, BT security *can* be broken, but AFAIK it needs specialist,
expensive hardware.

The threat model is the same as using public wifi - in theory traffic
could be sniffed (although it's a million times more likely to happen
over wifi than BT) but if you're doing online banking via a secure
HTTPS connection it doesn't matter - all they can sniff is encrypted
traffic.

In short, don't worry about it.

Any connections would not be in a public place, merely at a relatives
house with no convenient phone line access.

Thanks for info.

The connection will be SSL encryped (if its a secure site, like a bank), so
no less secure than connecting to a wiireless LAN, infact more secure
because of the low distance involved. I would be quite happy doing what you
want to do......
