Blue Screen Of Death attempting to open Cd rom

Get VXD error message and force to hard reboot when I try
to open or read a shared CD rom. Sometimes, I have access
to files on the shared CDrom, most times - Blue Screen Of
Death!).
Its as tho win 98 SE has no patience to wait for the CD
rom to whirl up and start reading the files ???
