Is anyone using Black Ice or maybe used it
in the past. I am thinking of swapping from Zonealarm
as I use ICS with 5 PC's and Zonealarm causes too many
headaches.

try this on comp.security.firewalls. Duane answers the questions on this
package. I understand its very good but a little difficult to set up. I
prefer outpost.
If you have 5 pcs why set up a linux machine between the 5 pcs and the
Internet.

Me also I have used it and the earlier related Tiny Personal Firewall for a
about 3 years no problems I currently use it in addition to the firewall in
built into my router --- nothing unwanted comes through the router firwall
but it is nice to have a second line of defence.
With 5 pcs connected via ics you should perhaps changing to a router or a
an Linux based firewall on an old PC (eg IP Cop, Smoothwall, Netboz) ?

I wouldn't recommend it personally. Agnitum Outpost is a much better
product. There are free (marginally restricted) and paid for versions.

As for ICS - it's a nightmare. Of many times trying to get it to work
reliably I've only managed once and that to a Linux box! That said, I do
now have it working using another firewall called Kerio Personal
Firewall. There are free (older) and paid for versions of this too. I
use the older but perfectly usable free version with Win/XP.

If you are on broadband though, why ICS? Even with a USB "modem", you
would be better off getting a Vigor hub/router that you can plug the
modem into. Much faster, more reliable and probably more secure too.

Though you have an edge of network firewall, you should still ALWAYS use
a personal firewall on every workstation connected to the Internet as
they do not quite do the same job (they do overlap).

Workstation based personal firewalls also know about and check
applications running on the workstation. They will only let through (in
general) applications that you want to talk to the outside world - e.g.
not Trojans, Spyware and the like.

Agnitum Outpost has some of the best security and feature reviews
around. I use it on my home PC's.

I used to use BlackIce Defender.
There was a problem found by www.grc.com that it wouldn't block
outgoing traffic if you did get a trojan. Rather than fixing the
problem BlackIce allegedly just looked for the GRC outgoing test
program and blocked that instead.

How long ago? Blackice was originally an incoming firewall only. Don't
know whether they have incorporated outgoing now as well.
