Binaries newsgroups

Hi,
Currently using Pipex although there binary newsgroups are really slow, can
anyone recommend another good ISP for fast binary access or another good
usenet service.

Ignore Shevek's comments they will not help you.

As far as binary news servers are concerned you may want to use a two or
three tier approach. Most persons that are heavy into binary downloads use
a decent binary news server. news.astraweb.com is an excellent choice up to
12 days retention and $10 for 25 GByte download or $25 for 65 GByte
download. This will cover most of your files. Than for long retention
needed when returning from a vacation add either GigaNews.com or
EasyNews,com for $10 a month to it. Giga has 30 days plus and EasyNews has
about 22 to 25 days depending on the postings. EasyNews has the advantage
you can look at the newsgroups through a web interface without downloading
the headers into a news reader.You can than zip them and download them as
package.

Forte (www.forteinc.com), the makers of Agent and Free Agent, have a news
service that I find pretty good.

....but I get it from GigaNews, not from my ISP. I have been with
GigaNews for over six years. I've never had a problem, has only been
down twice, that I can remember. Retention is excellent. Support is
stellar, not that I have ever needed support, but once or twice.
The GigaNews feed can keep up with my 3MBpSec cable feed. My ISP uses
SuperNews which is a terrible feed. It is slow and retention stinks.
Binaries are not complete.

I pay $7.95/month for my GigaNews feed and would give up my ISP, before
I would GigaNews. Since you are in the UK, YMMV.

My point was that Pipex now supply a giganews feed so there is no need
to pay extra unless you want the full giganews service.

I have used giganews myself in the past and found it a great servcice

From your original post, "another good usenet service". You didn't say
if you wanted a free one. What exactly are you asking? Do you want a
free one? Do you need binaries? Would you be willing to pay extra for
a usenet feed? My crystal ball is out of service at the moment.

It sounds like you WANT the full service. If your ISP is so bad and
slow, then you would need to stick with what you have or pay extra.
More than likely most ISP usenet feeds stink, as 90% of folks don't
know about usenet, so ISP's are not required to have a good feed for
only 10% of their business.

While that may be true of the majority, a few of the UK ISPs have taken
steps to offer binaries with better retention and completion. In spring
2000, Claranet was coping reasonably well, from memory, and then decided
to offer a news-only service on a commercial basis. Initially users were
within Claranet, but from the autumn of 2000 (as UK ADSL services were
being rolled out and costs possibly coming down), they opened up and
quickly had to take steps to reduce demand (they were charging 20 GBP
a year with no limit on traffic).

Claranews.com was live from May 2000 so my memory is not completely up
the creek :-) Anyway, things went nuts in October/November 2000 and at
the time users were complaining while changes to software (and/or h/w)
were undertaken. 4 years on, Plus.Net boosted their news service (by
installing several new servers, presumably much more powerful than the
old, rather than upgrading them). In my view (with a slightly limited
use of binaries) both services have been fairly good for the money, and
both ISPs charge reasonable fees that include their binaries services.
One other service, from Pipex, has recently decided to get news from
Giganews but has a cap on how much its users download, and charge for
anything in excess of 10 GB a month, from posts made recently. Peter M.
