beyond adsl for ordinary joe (?)

the hunger for faster broadband is really getting to me as of late, and I
figured the only way to get this is to look beyond the shackles of bt-line
adsl. I'm with zen currently who are tops but they can only give me what the
bt line will withstand, which is around 4mb/sec. I get good service from zen
but their hands are tied too.
I'm aware that costs for faster broadband may rise considerably but if those
costs are mostly just for installation/setup I might be willing to shell
out. Four figures if necessary. A visit to sam knows confirms what I
suspected - that I'm currently getting the best I can get on an adsl line so
if anyone can throw light or give advice about what might be available
beyond adsl I'd be grateful. I can't get virgin 50Mb cable in my area
either.
I have a wlan grid dish and good equipment for wireless (all cisco) so I'm
not frightened of that avenue.

http://aa.nu/broadband-FC.html

Note carefully that a unit is worth a LOT more in the evenings and at
weekends.

Have a look at http://aa.nu/ethernet.html for ethernet, up to 10gig.
Installation is likely to be 4 figures, possibly 5 depending on where
you are but the quick quote doesn't commit you to anything. Is fibre to
the cabinet likely to reach your area soon?

I think BE are doing bonded ADSL, not sure if they will bond more than two
lines though. Other suppliers do this also.

I'm intrigued as to what normally is at the other end of that big wifi link,
you wouldn't have bought that kit with something in mind,
(unless they have enabled now WPA) (I'm joking of course)

Of course if you know someone within range with a fast enough Internet
it might be worth doing some tests.

I'm fortunate to obtain ADSL2+ syncing at 20,494/1,295 kbs, and there is no
NTL in this street, but it occurred to me that if I had poor ADSL speeds,
the nearest houses with NTL are only a couple of parallel streets away.

looks good but unavailable in my area. After visiting bt's website I
couldn't even get a forecast as to if/when it would be available. I've
written to zen to see if they know anything at all about it and my area.

now you've got me thinking...I could mount the dish high on a rotor and
physically search for what might be a corporate-level connect....
