BEWARE trick question from SKY Support

I phoned SKY for tech support and was asked whether my phone
connection was via an extension lead. Silly me told the truth and said
it was - I was then told they don't support setups with extension
leads, and couldn't help any further. Trick question or what !!!!

Lesson: if you use an extension lead, don't admit it......mind you, if
you need support, forget it - they couldn't/ wouldn't tell me there
was any problem at the SKY end, even though the internet green light
mysteriously came back (of its own accord) late the same day.

I doubt it's that they don't /support/ it, it's just that the service is
only guaranteed as far as your master socket. Your internal wiring isn't
SKY's responsibility.

This is the same as any ADSL provider really, although SKY should have
asked you to check your filtering and try replicating the problem from
the master socket with all your other telephony devices removed. Not
particularly great service if they did just bluntly tell you that they
were unable to offer support.

Did they?

IME, they have a script which they follow to the letter but which they
don't understand.

It's a similar thing with Orange. If you don't use a livebox, they tell
you to sod off. Providing you know what livebox status lights equate to
connected / attempting to synch etc you can bluff your way through tech
support

None that I know of for sure. When I was there in 2000 ish, the montly wages for
a factory worker at this company in Bombay we were visiting amounted to the
equivalent of $(US) 80.

All the people I spoke to at Sky were in the UK. All were equally
clueless and unhelpful.

All the people I've spoken to at Be so far have been in Bulgaria. All
have been equally knowledgeable & courteous.

(I'm also having dealings with TomTom support at the moment for a
friend. They're taking a week to respond to each email and missing or
misunderstanding what I tell them.

I would guess an offshore techie gets about 1/2 the rate his onshore
equivalent gets? I am judging this by our daily rates, but these don't
equate to salary
