Better than AOL?

Are there broadband providers I could switch to that meet the following
criteria

1. Must be at least as reliable than AOL (I had no problems with them)
2. Must be cheaper (considering the above why else would I want to
change?); by that I'm looking for 1 or 2mb bandwidth and unlimited
bandwidth usage for less than £20. There should be no limits on
bandwidth usage.
3. No 12 months minimum contract. This is important.

Any ideas?

You get what you pay for in this life.

Well that's a helpful comment, and patently untrue in many cases.

Referring to the OP's question I don't think you're going to do much
better than AOL. They actually have a reasonably good reputation here
for providing a reliable, uncapped service - it's just that you need
to be able to avoid their proprietary software (if you want to).

There are a number of ISPs offering ADSL at £14.99 but, as far as I
can see, all these have limitations on total usage in some shape or
form.

He asked for ideas.

The rest of your reply suggested that he was probably better off
staying with AOL, thereby implying that a better, cheaper, alternative
was probably not available, thereby agreeing with me!

You're asking a lot with that requirement. Depends *what* you want
to do, and when. For example, Claranet does an off-peak service at
under 18 pounds, but you might be unhappy it wasn't on Mon-Fri from
0800 to 1800 (and you would certainly be unhappy about the 12 month
contract). You may get a 'no limit' service with no newsgroups for
under 20 quid, but again with a 12 month contract. Sorry! Peter M

Absolute and utter piffle. In todays market place, things other then price
can make a difference. Norton Anti Virus is probably one of the most
expensive home anti virus kits, and it is absolute poop.

I bought a TV a few years ago for £800, in my nearest electronic shop the
same model TV was £1600.

Should I assume the model that costs £1600 was better then the identical
model costing £800 elsewhere??

And Plusnet has a service not far off your target, however over the last few
weeks it has essentially been transferred to an off peak service, and only
usable for 2mb between 1am and 7am in the morning.

OP stated "unlimited". Plusnet do not have any truly unlimited service
for around that price.

My plusnet broadband has been rock solid with no noticeable slowdown.
Are you sure you haven't been shaped?

<MPFC> You were lucky!

It will come as no surprise to most that AOL have recently been voted
one of the worst ISPs in the UK (PCPro).

My p2p has gone to 3k during the day, and only speeds up after 1am, up to
110kbps. . I download between 30 and 60gb a month. I have been given no
notice that i am been shaped.
