Hi

Can anyone suggest an antenna to be used with say a LinkSys router(or
if another router is better) that will give a directional range of 5Km
or about 3miles?

Has anyone done anything like that or know of a company that sells
such an antenna?

Any thoughts are most appreciated

You will be lucky to get 5 km on wireless without amplifcation. I have been
looking at baffalo gear what has had good reviews but the antennas are big
money . have a look on ebay thiers a lot of antennas on there
but remember that at 2.4 ghz you need good coax as you can lose 0.5 - 3 Db
gain per meter on cheap (and not so cheap) coax
so in short you need big ££££ for anthing over 2km

Don't know about the Linksys router in particular, but 3 miles is no
problem at all with Wifi given the right equipment. I use smartBridges
outdoor electronics a lot, can use Maxrad, Arc Wireless, Pac Wireless
antennas, many others. You might want to poke around in www.electro-comm.com

Either you are underinformed or haven't been paying attention to the
info. Buffalo sucks hind tit. Long runs of coax is old hat, not
necessary anymore. 3 miles on a 12-19dbi flat panel antenna is no big
deal. With a *one* foot run of LMR400 from antenna to outdoor bridge
cable loss doesn't even matter. Use one of the newer "all-in-one units"
and there's no coax loss at all. Get with the program. And amplifier?
I've never even seen one in person.

2 x 19dBi antennas @ £31 each
2 x 25' runs of LMR400 @ £35 each
2 x Linksys WAP11's @ £75 each

Grand total = £282 to connect two sites together at 3 miles distance.

Either my interpretation of big £££ is different to yours or you need to
ask your parents for more pocket money!

Solwise are ok for things like connectors and some of the cheaper
antennas, just for high gain stuff, that price is silly.

Stella Doradus do some but they look a bit cheap and flimsy but on the
other hand if you're careful they are cheap. I've never used one of
their parabolics though.

Where did you get these prices?

That's true but the flip side is that you'll have to climb the tower (or pay
someone else to do so) whenever you have trouble with the radios. Sometimes
it's worth it and sometimes not. Also even with 1ft of LMR400 you'll have
some connector loss so for short runs (maybe 25ft) it's usually not worth
it.

You might want to google for "path loss calculator". There are lots of them
out there including one at ydi.com. If you find that you can use 14-18 dbi
antennas you should check out Superpass, they make great (and fairly low
cost) pannel antennas. They make other types too but pannels are their
specialty. Before you spend too much time comparing products and prices
though you really need to make sure you have line of sight between the two
ends of your link, otherwise you are wasting your time.
