Best Wi, internal or external?

My PC is not Wi Fi enabled so I have the choice of now either, fitting
an internal card or using an external USB one, or of course I could wait
until I upgrade my PC and get one with WI Fi enabled but as I am not
really ready to change I would be hoping to hear that in fact the
external card via USB is the better option.
I await the verdict with trepidation.

Cheapness......USB

But I have an inbuilt hatred of using USB for comms & if I had to do
what you are wanting, I would personally go for an internal PCI card
which has a removable aeriel & then buy a remote aeriel, which come in
all different shapes & sizes, but an internal colinear with half a meter
of flylead would suit me.

The other option is to use a mains LAN unit (you'd need 2 actually),
which means you can use the 240v house wiring as a LAN, solves all your
problems in one go. I have known a few people who have tried it & none
of them have a bad word to say about it & most have tried the wifi route
& failed

Belkin PCI, PCCard, USB 802.11g adapters all retail at £19.99 so that
makes the choice a bit harder.

USB is external plug-in and can be positioned for best signal on a USB
extension lead. PCI card means taking the lid off etc and aerial may
be in a daft place and require an extra lead for positioning it.

Need USB2 port for decent 802.11g speed as USB1.1 is 12 Mbits/s.

A WiFi adapter on length of cable (up to 5m) connecting trough USB port is
by far the best solution.
Main reason is that is easy to position for best reception, e.g. 5' high is
often better and sometimes an inch can make a difference. Also it's easy to
put simple silver foil on a folded card reflector behind it, which can
ensure steady signal.
Finally it's fairly cheap. I found the best one is D-Link DWL G122

Martin
