Could someone please advise me, in their opinion, what is the "best" overall
router (not wireless) for use with Windows...

Thanks...

A bit awkward, without knowing a little more. For example, some may want a
unit that is suitable for gamers, or VoIP, or VPN, or because they're 10km
from the exchange, and a few routers might serve their needs better... A
number of routers need to be reset on a regular basis if you use file swap
(peer to peer transfers - doesn't matter whether the files are legal or not
but the method is usually to open a few dozen sessions with different users
and that can cause the router to get upset after 24 hours). ..more info..

Your router has nothing to do with how good your P2P performance will be!
You need to work out what it is you are asking - do you know what a router
is?
Try Google.
If you have set UPNP/port forwarding correctly and configured your firewalls
then it should be OK. Speed is dependant on the upload speed of others and
your download speed. Being 5 miles from an exchange has nothing to do with
a router.

A router is a good idea from a security angle versus a standard modem,
as it will only allow traffic through that machines on your internal
network asked for.

You will also receive a different IP address that can't be accessed
directly by someone else on the internet, as only the router knows the
IP address it assigned to your machine.

Really? It is well known that ADSL modem/router performance varies
considerably and this is particularly relevant where the line is long. You
don't say if your Binatone is a USB modem or a combined router/modem but USB
modems are not noted for thier good performance.

It's a USB modem and I know it's crap as since moving to RADSL (yes I can
still only get 2Mb!) I am getting line drop outs about 3 times a day - I
never had them when on plain old ADSL. All I want is a reliable, good
quality router for connecting one PC to a 2Mb ADSL line that is no more than
5 miles from the exchange. I don't do gaming. I only use the net for http/
ftp and occasionally p2p and of course smtp.

Personally I have found the Draytek 2600 or 2800 range pretty well bomb
proof. You can buy a 2600 on Ebay for around £60.00. Other speak well of
some Zyxel models but I have no personal experience of them. I currently
have a 2800 because I wanted certain features not included on the 2600. Both
my old 2600 and the 2800 are run 24/7/365 and have never failed me. My 2600
is now installed at a friends house and continues to run perfectly.

Try a Netgear DG834 - 45 pounds on Amazon, everyone finds them easy to
configure and the diagnostics features make it easy to troubleshoot. You can
opt for wireless or not.
