I need to buy a 5m RJ45 cable to hook up my PC to my Bebox router but
I'm not sure whether I should get a Cat5e or Cat6 cable and whether it
needs to be shielded.

Just pick up the cheapest you can find, preferably not somewhere like
Comet / Currys !

I very much doubt the length you're talking about will have any effect
whatsoever.

Thanks guys. Play.com have got all the different types for under £5
but there's more choice of colours for Cat5e, so I can get one which I
can easily distinguish from all my other cables

I crimp my own. If you go this route though make sure you use stranded
cable not solid core.

I wish they did this at my workplace. For some reason, which even the I.T.
guys I spoke to don't know, every single solitary patch cable in the
entire company, which covers 10+ sites, are *all* yellow..!

Maybe they bought a job lot, I don't know, but it makes tracing the rat's
nest behind my desk a nightmare..!!

Oh actually I tell a lie, I found a blue cable in the cupboard the other
day..!

Yeah, I often find stuff, like USB cables, in those shops. Although
thinking about it, I believe it was one I got from there that I had
trouble with...

One downside with Play.com is you have to wait 21 days before they'll
accept a "gone missing in the post" claim and send you another one, so
not much use if you're in a hurry!

I daresay a few people have been confused by the yellow phono
connectors used for composite video though.

I guess I would do this if I thought I might need to make a few leads
in the near future but I'm not planning to and my DIY skills leave a
lot to be desired anyway
