I have just UN-installed McAfee Virus Scan to avoid the need to
subscribe for another year and have installed AVG Free Version and am
more than pleased with its seamless and efficient operation compared to
McAfee.

However, I notice it has not apparently got a free firewall so could I
ask advice as to the best free firewall, is it Zone Alarm and if so, is
it free?

The OP asked for advice on firewalls, not antivirus programs.

ZoneAlarm standard is free, you can have ZoneAlarm Pro for 15 days trial
or until you reboot your computer, whichever comes soonest.
